Discover how the Episcopal Supervisors’ Council is transforming communities through leadership, advocacy, and spiritual guidance.

Guiding Leadership and Oversight

The Episcopal Supervisor plays a pivotal role in steering the mission and vision of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. By providing strategic leadership, the Supervisor ensures that the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) and its affiliated group, the Young People’s and Children’s Division, (YPD), the Ministers Spouses, Widows, And Widowers Organization + PK’s, (MSWAWO+PKs), and the Christian Debutantes and Masters Commission, (CDMC), operates in alignment with the church’s overarching goals.
Through effective oversight, the Supervisors foster an environment where women and young people are empowered to lead and serve. This includes organizing and presiding over key events, such as the Episcopal District’s WMS Annual Conference Meetings, and leading delegations to significant church gatherings. The Supervisor’s leadership is instrumental in mentoring emerging leaders and promoting active participation in church governance.

Spiritual Guidance and Organizational Leadership

History of The Supervisors’ Council

The Bishops’ Spouses’ Council, originally called the “Bishops’ Wives’ Council,” was founded in 1955. The first president was Mrs. Julia Fountain, the wife of the Senior Bishop. Initially, presidents were elected based on seniority. The process changed after the presidency of Mrs. Veatrice Reid. In her writings, Mrs. Elvira Baber characterized the Council as a group of sisters seeking a closer relationship. Paramount among their goals was to be kind, loving, and supportive wives for the bishops. While it was expected that the bishop’s wife would be Supervisor of the Women’s Missionary Society, this group was not formed as a place to inspire and develop supervisors. Rather, it was intended that the Council would be a place where the wives convened and developed a sisterhood for a like purpose. In 1972, Mrs. Agnes Ball as, president made it clear that the “politics” of the church had no place in this organization. This is the noble goal to which the organization aspires. Here the members voice their honest opinions, express their support of members in crisis, and collectively bring the power of prayer on behalf of people, their concerns and their issues. At the 2000 General Conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio, the first female bishop was elected. The Council welcomed, with open arms, its first male member and promptly changed its name to the “Bishops’ Spouses’ Council.” In continued efforts to remain inclusive, a subsequent name change to “Supervisors’ Council” was necessitated for supervisors who are not married to the presiding Bishop.
Over the years, the group has held retreats, sponsored the Annual Prayer Breakfast at the WMS Executive Board Meetings, monitored and reported on widows in our Episcopal Districts, conducted memorials for deceased members, welcomed and honored new members, and donated to, and supported worthy causes. Through advocacy and community engagement, the Supervisor champions social justice and encourages participation in both local and global mission efforts. By building networks and collaborations with other church organizations and community groups, the Supervisor enhances the impact of the mission, empowering women to take on leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to the church and society.

Mentorship Strategies

Empowerment of Women Leaders

Mentorship is at the heart of our empowerment strategies for women leaders within the church. We provide guidance and encouragement to emerging leaders, helping them navigate their roles with confidence and grace. Our mentorship programs are designed to foster personal growth and leadership development, ensuring that women are well-equipped to take on significant roles within the church.

Empowering women to participate actively in church leadership and decision-making is a key focus of our initiatives. We create opportunities for women to lead and influence, recognizing their unique contributions to the church’s mission. Through mentorship and empowerment, we aim to build a strong network of women leaders who can drive positive change within their communities.

By nurturing the next generation of women leaders, we ensure the continued growth and vitality of the church. Our mentorship programs are tailored to meet the needs of women at different stages of their leadership journey, providing the support and resources necessary for their success.

Building Bridges for Greater Impact

The Power of Networking and Collaboration

Networking and collaboration are vital components in advancing the mission of our church. By fostering strong relationships with other church organizations and community groups, we can amplify our efforts and reach more individuals in need. These partnerships allow us to share resources, ideas, and strategies, ultimately leading to more effective programs and initiatives. Working together, we can address complex social issues, support each other’s missions, and create a unified front in advocating for justice and empowerment. Through collaboration, we not only strengthen our community but also enhance our ability to serve and witness in the world.
